Make two failure lists

Mains power and internet connectivity are different dependencies. A feeder may retain a stored schedule when the router is offline yet stop when its power supply fails. Another device may offer batteries that preserve delivery but disable the camera or wireless connection. Write down the behavior documented for your exact model instead of treating the words backup power as a complete specification.

Check batteries and local controls

Find the permitted battery type, replacement procedure and low-battery indication in the manual. Check whether batteries are included and whether the device tests them while mains power is present. Confirm that you can read the schedule and operate necessary local controls. Never substitute an incompatible adapter or assume a USB connector means every power bank supports the required voltage, current and operating mode.

Rehearse while you are present

Use the manufacturer’s permitted procedure to observe a short internet interruption and a separate power interruption at home. Check the next scheduled meal, clock retention and the way alerts resume after reconnection. Do not reset a device merely because an app looks offline unless its instructions require that step. Restore normal operation and verify the schedule before ending the rehearsal.

Arrange an actual response

Give a trusted caregiver the location of the food, a manual feeding plan and the device instructions. Explain how to identify a missed meal and when to contact you. Cooling, dispensing and monitoring may have different backup limits, particularly with wet food. A battery claim is not permission to leave a cat unattended for days; regular human checks remain part of the arrangement.

Research scope

This is editorial research from published sources, not a hands-on test. Manufacturer claims and general guidance do not guarantee results for every cat. Check the current manual for your exact model and region.
